Ambani remains dark horse

The Zee-Sony Pictures merger in India is set to create the country’s largest entertainment company. However, one has to wait for the reaction of Mukesh Ambani, who was pushing for a merger of his TV18 Broadcast and Jio Cinemas with Zee Entertainment.

If insiders are to be believed, Reliance will continue to look for opportunities in the sector and is scouting tie-ups with other entertainment companies. Meanwhile, whether Mr Ambani makes a counter offer for Zee or not is a big question in industry circles.

With the entertainment industry shifting to OTT (over the top) and with NetFlix, Amazon and Apple TV dishing out better content than their Indian counterparts, the future of the traditional TV channel looks bleak. The war over remote control is going to be more fierce in the new year and Mr Ambani is sure to play a more aggressive role in the future.
