The Indian government wants to sell all public sector companies, barring a few in strategic sectors.
But what will be most watched is the Air India sale. The government is expecting a good amount from the sale, but banking insiders say the Centre will be lucky even if it gets a billion dollars from the sell-off of the national carrier. The reason is that due to Covid, the airline sector is expected to make losses for the next one year and no investor would like to buy an airline unless it comes virtually free.
Insiders, meanwhile, say the government and Tata deal is almost done and the former owners are likely to acquire the ‘Maharaja’ at a throwaway price. Perhaps, this may lead the government to postpone the sale by another year.
