In a rare decision, the Supreme Court has decided to review its own decision of last year which had ruled in favour of the Tatas in the Tata versus Mistry dispute. Besides, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana has decided to hear the case in open court, giving hope of a favourable outcome to the Mistry camp. Cyrus Mistry, former chairman of the Tata group and whose family owns an 18.5 per cent stake in Tata Sons, is one of India’s wealthiest men. Mistry had moved various tribunals and then the country’s top court on his removal from chairmanship of the Tata group.
The SC order of last year made scathing attacks on Mistry, saying the ‘only mistake’ the Tata Sons board had made was to appoint Mistry as chairman. It would be interesting to see what new arguments are put forward by Mistry when the SC takes up the latest hearing in March.
