Dr NC Saha’s name is synonymous with packaging. A doyen in the world of packaging science and technology, he virtually eats, drinks and breathes packaging! A food technologist with a Master’s from Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru, in 1987 he joined the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), Mumbai, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, as Professor and Scientist. A year later, he got admitted to the School of Packaging, Michigan State University, for an advanced programme in food packaging as a UNDP fellow. In 1998, he enrolled with the University of Tehran for an advanced programme in productivity concepts and tools as a fellow of the Asian Productivity Organization (APO). After a couple of years, North Maharashtra University awarded him a PhD in Packaging Managing for developing a 5D model of packaging and its synergy with marketing of consumer goods.
Having handled multiple jobs of teaching, testing, certification of packages and consultancies as a professor for 22 years, Dr Saha was elevated as Director and Principal Executive Officer of Indian Institute of Packging in 2009. During his stewardship, IIP attained new heights and got global recognition. As a result, IIP became a fully autonomous university.
Dr. Saha was also the visting faculty in packaging at a number of institutes and universities in India. He was also appointed as Supervisor for PhD students in the department of printing engineering, Jadavpur University, and co-guide for MTech students at the Centre of Polymer Science and Engineering, IIT-Delhi. Dr Saha has been recognized widely as scholar. He has published 25 research papers in national and international research journals and 450 technical papers in national and international magazines. He has authored two books on Food Packaging for IGNOU and one book on Packaging of Fragrance for FFDC. Interestingly, he has acquired a patent for a packaging container made of a plastic laminated tube for liquid jaggery, for the enhancement of its shell life up to 180 days. He was Editor of the bi-monthly magazine ‘Packaging India’ and also former Editorin-Chief of the Journal of Packaging Technology and Research by Springer Nature, Germany.
After retiring from IIP, he has taken up higher responsibilities in the world of packaging by setting up the Foundation for Innovative Packaging and Sustainability (FIPS), an NGO. At present he is Chairman of 3 sectional committees of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). He is also Head-Packaging of Natural Agro-Product Committee, APEDA, Government of India. He is a visiting Professor, Indian Institute of Technology(IIT)-Delhi and a member of the expert committee, Indian Pharmacopeia Commission, Government of India. BIRAC – Ministry of Bio-technology, Govt. of India and permanent honorary member of Asian Packaging Federation. He is an eminent speaker at national and international packaging conferences.
