After Ratan Tata decided to sell the Lakme cosmetic brand in the ‘90s, the Tata group is once again re-entering the segment. The sale of Lakme now seems to have been ill-conceived, considering the billions of dollars of valuation attracted by Nykaa.
The Tata group’s online shopping platform, Tata Cliq, is looking at opening offline stores in the premium segment. These stores will be around 1,000-1,500 square feet and will largely open in metro cities. The Tatas plan to open seven stores as part of the pilot and also have an online presence.
The Tata group will compete with Reliance Retail, which will also enter the market by early next year.
The big question is whether selling Lakme was another mistake by Tata — like entering telecom and selling cement.
