India Inc is divided over the fate of Madhabi Puri Buch, SEBI chairperson, after the opposition Congress party raised several alleged conflicts of interest associated with her. While some say she should go on her own without embarrassing the government further, others say she should continue till her retirement in February next year.
The government is reported to have informally told Buch that she should try to mend fences with SEBI employees as they had reportedly complained of a toxic work culture under her leadership. The government, however, is clear that Buch has to defend herself and it would not like to be embroiled in a controversy which shows the government in poor light.
Will Buch survive the ‘conflict of interest’ allegations? Only time will tell, but the episode has undeniably tarnished the market watchdog’s image.
