Google's Global Downsizing Impacts India, Over 450 Employees Laid Off

Google has joined other technology giants in downsizing its workforce, with over 450 employees in India being laid off as part of the global action. The downsizing was announced by Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai on January 20, and has caused a stir on social media platforms with the hashtag #googlelayoffs trending on LinkedIn.

Details of the Downsizing:

The reduction in India headcount came into effect from late Thursday night, with impacted employees being informed via email. Google India country head Sanjay Gupta also sent an email to the employees detailing the decision and other modalities. While Google did not respond to questions from the media, Pichai had previously announced plans to reduce the workforce by 12,000. The cuts will be spread across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels, and regions.

The Impact on Employees:

The layoffs in India have caused concern among those who have been impacted. Many of the affected employees had been with the company for a long time, and some are struggling to find new employment opportunities during the pandemic. The move has also sparked debate about the job market in India, with some saying that the government needs to take steps to create more jobs.
