GSTN Introduces Data Archival Feature on GST Portal: Taxpayers Advised to Secure Old GST Returns

New GST Portal Update Enhances Data Access

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has implemented a significant update to its policies regarding the storage and accessibility of GST returns on the GST portal. As of September 24, 2024, the GSTN has introduced a data archival feature, which will allow taxpayers to access returns dating back to 2017, but only for a limited period of seven years.

Archival Policy: Limited Data Retention

According to the latest guidelines, data on the GST portal will now be retained for seven years from the filing date. Once this period expires, the data will no longer be available for taxpayer viewing. This retention policy is designed to streamline the management of GST returns data while maintaining transparency for users.

Monthly Archival Process Begins

The data archival process has already begun, starting with the returns filed for July 2017, which were archived on August 1, 2024. Returns filed for August 2017 were archived on September 1, 2024, and this process will continue on a monthly basis. For example, returns for September 2017 will be archived by October 1, 2024. Taxpayers are urged to download any relevant data before it is permanently archived to avoid future inconveniences.

Steps to Access Archived Data on the GST Portal

To access the archived data, taxpayers can follow these steps:

1. Visit the GST portal at www.gst.gov.in.
2. On the homepage, navigate to the "News and Updates" section.
3. Click on "View Archives."
4. Select the desired year and month.
5. Archived data for the selected period will be displayed, and users can filter the information by type.

Improved Transparency and Accessibility for Taxpayers

The introduction of the archival feature is part of a broader effort to enhance the functionality and user experience of the GST portal. By providing taxpayers with an easy-to-use system for accessing historical data, GSTN is improving transparency and empowering users with critical insights into the evolution of GST policies and regulations.

Download And Secure Your Data

Taxpayers are advised to take immediate action by downloading any necessary data from the GST portal, especially for returns older than seven years, as it will no longer be accessible after the specified period. This new archival feature will help users better manage their data while keeping the GST portal efficient and up to date.
