India Launches Green Hydrogen Mission to Promote Sustainable Energy

Union Cabinet approves Rs. 19,744 – crore project

India's cabinet has approved a project to promote the production and use of green hydrogen as a sustainable energy source. The green hydrogen mission aims to accelerate the development of green hydrogen technologies and infrastructure, with the goal of reducing India's reliance on fossil fuels and addressing climate change. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the green hydrogen mission has the potential to generate up to 10 GW of renewable energy and create over 50,000 jobs in India.

Support of various companies

Several companies have already committed their support to the green hydrogen mission, including Tata Chemicals, Indian Oil Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation. These companies will work with the government and other stakeholders to develop green hydrogen projects and advance the adoption of this clean energy source in India.

What is the Green Hydrogen Mission – An Overview

Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, to electrolyze water and produce hydrogen gas. This process generates no greenhouse gas emissions, making green hydrogen a clean and sustainable energy source.

The green hydrogen mission aims to establish India as a leader in the production and use of green hydrogen, and to accelerate the development of green hydrogen technologies and infrastructure. This includes research and development of green hydrogen production technologies, as well as the construction of green hydrogen production facilities and the development of a supply chain for green hydrogen.

In addition to its environmental benefits, green hydrogen has the potential to drive economic growth and create new jobs in India. The production and use of green hydrogen can stimulate the development of new industries and technologies, as well as support the growth of existing industries. According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the green hydrogen market has the potential to reach $140 billion by 2030, with the Asia-Pacific region being a key growth market.

The Committed Companies are as follows:

1. Tata Chemicals:
Tata Chemicals is a leading manufacturer of chemicals, fertilizers, and consumer products. The company has committed to supporting the green hydrogen mission by exploring opportunities for green hydrogen production and use in India.

2. Indian Oil Corporation:
Indian Oil Corporation is India's largest oil and gas company, with a refining capacity of 80.7 million metric tons per year. The company has expressed its support for the green hydrogen mission and plans to work with the government and other stakeholders to advance the adoption of green hydrogen in India.

3. Bharat Petroleum Corporation:
Bharat Petroleum Corporation is a leading oil and gas company in India, with a refining capacity of 38.3 million metric tons per year. The company has committed to supporting the green hydrogen mission and exploring opportunities for green hydrogen production and use in India.

India Poised to be a Global Leader in Sustainable Energy

India's green hydrogen mission represents a significant step forward in the country's transition to a more sustainable energy system. With the support of leading companies like Tata Chemicals, Indian Oil Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Reliance and the government, India is well-positioned to become a leader in the production and use of green hydrogen, and to realize the many economic and environmental benefits of this clean energy source.
