The recent celebrations of Durga Puja, Navratri, and Ramleela have not only strengthened India's cultural traditions but also significantly boosted the nation’s economy. According to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), these festivals generated an estimated Rs 50,000 crore in trade, creating vast employment opportunities for artisans, craftsmen, and various workers.
India’s festive season has had a profound economic impact, particularly over the last ten days of Durga Puja, Navratri, and Ramleela celebrations. The demand for pandal construction, idol-making, decorations, and food services surged, benefitting thousands of workers. Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of CAIT, highlighted the extensive business and employment opportunities that emerged across multiple sectors due to these events.
The festivals provided significant employment opportunities to local artisans and craftsmen, especially those specializing in idol-making, pandal decoration, and lighting setups. Skilled workers in electrical and sound systems were also in high demand. Their contributions not only enhanced the grandeur of the events but also gave them much-needed financial support.
Consumer spending saw a substantial rise, benefiting businesses in clothing, jewellery, home decor, religious items, and food services. Retail trade witnessed a sharp uptick, with traditional clothing, modern attire, and festive home decor items flying off the shelves. Small and medium-sized enterprises supplying materials for pandals, lighting, and sound systems experienced notable growth.
Ramleela events attracted a large influx of religious tourists, boosting the hospitality sector. Hotels, restaurants, and transport services near event venues recorded increased business, as religious tourism provided a significant boost to the local economy. These cultural events have proven to be a boon for the hospitality industry, which continues to benefit from the ongoing festive season.
The role of local artisans in crafting idols and decorations was vital in upholding the cultural beauty of these celebrations. Their work not only contributed to the success of the festivals but also emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting traditional crafts. The employment generated through these events serves as a crucial support system for millions of workers in labour-intensive industries.
Looking ahead, Praveen Khandelwal expressed optimism for the upcoming Diwali season, predicting that the economic momentum will continue. Small traders, artisans, and workers are hopeful that the next wave of festivities will bring even greater trade and employment opportunities. The recent festive season has played a significant role in boosting India's economy, generating employment and business opportunities across a wide range of industries. As the nation gears up for Diwali, the positive economic effects are expected to persist, further stimulating trade and supporting the livelihoods of countless workers across the country.
