As the fiscal year approaches, the Finance Ministry is gearing up for a groundbreaking change in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) landscape. The focus is on introducing pre- filled GST return forms, aiming to tackle the persistent issue of data mismatches and associated tax notices.
In a move to enhance ease of doing business and curtail unnecessary demand notices, the Finance Ministry envisions implementing pre-filled GST return forms before the upcoming fiscal year. The initiative addresses the significant problem of data mismatches, streamlining processes and fostering a business-friendly environment.
While charting this transformative path, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is meticulously evaluating the technological requirements and potential upgrades. The debate centers on assessing additional costs against the risk of system slowdown due to the integration of data from diverse databases.
The existing automated scrutiny module for GST returns, triggered when data mismatches exceed 20 percent, employs data analytics to identify risks. The move towards pre-filled GST return forms aims to proactively prevent such discrepancies, providing a more efficient and error-resistant system.
Building on the success of a pre-filled template for income tax returns used by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the GST reform draws inspiration from proven methodologies to streamline tax filing processes.
Before full-scale implementation, a pilot phase is set to assess the functionality and time efficiency of the pre-filled GST return form. This cautious approach ensures a smoother transition and addresses any unforeseen challenges.
